In cases where teeth are not brushed regularly, gum disease may occur. At the initial stage, the bacterial plaques (bacterial aggregation) accumulated on the teeth and under the gingiva are removed by brushing and the red gingiva can recover itself. However, the bacterial plaque hardens and becomes tartar. Due to progressive calculus and gingival inflammation, melting of the bone surrounding the tooth and keeping the tooth stable and/or gingival recession may be encountered. For this reason, tartar should be cleaned with special tools without scratching the dental tissues. Otherwise, tartar can accumulate on the scratched surfaces more quickly.

As in every application and treatment, the right procedure is important in tartar cleaning. If the tools used during cleaning are not used correctly, the tooth surface can be scratched. Or, if the wrong tools that scratch the tooth surface are used instead of the right tools, the tooth surface will be scratched. Bacteria accumulation is faster and easier on the scratched tooth surface and there is a quicker accumulation of calculus. However, the tooth surface that is cleaned with a proper tool and correct application becomes smoother. After cleaning, calculus accumulation on a smooth tooth is very difficult. For this reason, scaling is very useful and the life of the tooth is extended by preventing gingival recession and bone loss.
